Strength and flexibility imbalances in your body can affect your posture. The benefits of good posture make it a desirable factor of fitness to focus on. Consider the following advantages:

  • neck, shoulders and upper back that are not more painful or fatigued than the rest of your body at the end of the day, which will help to increase your concentration
  • optimal biomechanics for the best possible muscle performance and reduction of injuries created by muscle imbalance.
  • optimal organ and muscle function for maximum energy, endurance, and vigour
  • fewer upper and lower back problems
  • flatter and stronger stomach – in fact, without good posture, you can never achieve the look of a flat stomach
  • more confident, respectable and youthful appearance

Tim uses Pilates and other strengthening exercises, coupled with sports massage and stretching techniques to address the strength and flexibility imbalances in your body.

Good Posture: The Neutral Spine

Your posture can be improved by addressing the relationship between strength and flexibility in your body. Maintaining a neutral spine can feel almost impossible for some people because some of their muscles are so chronically tight, they make holding a good posture feel unnatural and very uncomfortable and it is now thought that people trying to stand or sit with good posture is creating more pain for these people.

If you first work on improving your flexibility in the muscles in your body that are held short, this will start to reduce pain experienced in the lower back, neck and shoulders. You will then start to allow the right muscles to be switched on again. Strengthening exercises should then focus on the opposing muscles as they have been held in an elongated position making them weak.

The correct combination of flexibility training and strengthening exercises will help to improve or correct a poor posture. Over-training a certain group of muscles, eg: chest, or actions of certain sports and unavoidable everyday activities such as sitting for long periods of time frequently lead to these problems.
