Pilates is a method of exercise that is accessible to everyone and although it can be performed with equipment, it can also be and is more commonly performed by simply just using a mat. This makes it accessible to everyone. Pilates, if recommended by your physiotherapist or doctor makes excellent exercise for assisting in the treatment and management of:

  • back pain
  • poor posture
  • neurological conditions
  • sports injuries
  • arthritis
  • stress-related problems through the relaxing nature of the exercises
  • before and after pregnancy

There are 8 principles to Pilates which are:

  • Concentration – It is important with Pilates to concentrate on doing the exercises correctly using the correct muscles. Repeatedly doing the exercises incorrectly leads to bad habits that are hard to correct.
  • Precision – Working the correct group of muscles that need to be worked in the correct order.
  • Isolation – Trying to switch off muscles that are not required for the movement.
  • Flowing Movements – This then leads to flowing movements.
  • Control – Controlling the movements throughout using the correct muscles.
  • Centering – Working from a strong centre or core.
  • Breathing – It is the breathing that helps activate the important core muscles.
  • Routine – Making the exercises become part of your lifestyle gives rise to the success of the Pilates method. Put simply practice makes perfect.
